The Limassol Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan (SUMP) is a comprehensive plan aimed at promoting sustainable transportation principles in the city by 2030. The SUMP is based on the principles of integration, participation, and evaluation to ensure that all stakeholders have a say in the development of the plan and that progress towards achieving the goals is regularly monitored and assessed.

The SUMP focuses on promoting sustainable modes of transportation, such as public transport, cycling, and walking, to reduce dependence on private cars and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. It sets specific targets for increasing the use of these modes of transport and reducing the use of private cars.

The plan also includes measures to improve the quality and accessibility of public transportation, such as the development of a modern, integrated public transport network, and the promotion of alternative fuels and clean energy sources. It also aims to increase the number of cycling and walking infrastructure, including dedicated cycling lanes and pedestrian walkways.

To ensure that the plan will be implemented effectively, the SUMP included a strong emphasis on stakeholder participation and engagement. This involved the consultation with a range of stakeholders, including residents, businesses, and transport providers, to ensure that their views and needs will be taken into account.

Overall, the Limassol SUMP is a comprehensive and ambitious plan that aims to promote sustainable transportation and create a more liveable and sustainable city.

ALA was a key member of the consortium that prepared the Limassol SUMP, which included PTV Group (Germany) and TREDIT SA (Greece). The consultancy was engaged in various components of the study including the review of available Strategic Development Plans and studies which affect land use, transport and mobility as well as the collection and analysis of socioeconomic and land use data. Furthermore, ALA participated in the generation and appraisal of future scenarios for Limassol’s urban structure and transport system and the selection of the preferred option as well as in the subsequent formulation of the SUMP’s elements and reports. As part of the SUMP process, a number of stakeholder committee meetings and five large public participation events were held.

In addition to the aforementioned activities, ALA independently undertook the relevant Strategic Environmental Assessment for the SUMP.
